The Joseph A. Cushman Award for Student Travel
This award from the Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research supports current undergraduate, masters’ and doctoral students, and those who have been awarded the Ph.D. no more than one year past the application deadline. The award funds those who wish to present the results of their theses or dissertations at Foundation-approved professional meetings or workshops in either an oral or poster session. It also funds (up to $500) students to attend workshops. The research projects or workshops should address microfossils or the organisms that make them. Applicants may receive one travel award per calendar year. Travel to present or learn about research on geochemistry using microfossils only as geochemical indicators is not funded; however, travel to present or learn about research on geochemistry that relates to some aspect of living or fossil foraminifera is fundable and should be explained in the abstract.
The currently approved meetings* (sponsored by the Foundation) include:
- Annual meeting of the Cushman Foundation, Geological Society of America Annual Meeting,
- Paleontological Society meetings co-sponsored by the Foundation, and the
- Forams Meetings (approx. every 4 years at international venues)
*Note that other scientific meetings/workshops recommended by the student’s faculty advisor will be considered.
Student awardees will be notified after the abstract acceptance date. For meetings, they are expected to attend Foundation events (receptions, award ceremonies, and technical and poster sessions). For workshops, they are expected to attend the entire workshop. Awardees should acknowledge the Foundation’s funding in their presentations and publications on the research.

For all applications, in the case of a recent Ph.D., the advisor's letter must verify the date that the degree was awarded. The number of applicants may affect award amounts. The Board of Directors reserves the right to make no awards or to make awards that differ from the requested budget. Application materials should be sent to the Cushman Foundation by email in the form of one pdf file of the entire application. For fall and winter meetings, please send the materials to be received by August 15th, and for spring and summer meetings by February 15th. If, by the deadline, an application is missing any of the five required items, it will not be considered for funding. Submit items to cushmanfoundation@gmail.com.
